10 Powerful Prayers for Our Children Every Mum Should Pray

 In Christian Mum

As a mum, you’re surely familiar with the hectic days of running a household. Most likely you feel utterly depleted by the end of the day.

Then finally the house has gone quiet, and you’re ready for your time with God… only to find that you’re so tired you can’t even think of a decent prayer to pray for your children.

Does this sound familiar to you? If it does, you’re going to love the following 10 powerful prayers you can pray right now for your children.

1. Prayer for Faith

One of the most important prayers for our children (in my opinion) is, the prayer for faith. It’s a ‘simple’ – yet very much needed – request to God to help our children:

  • grow in their faith
  • to trust in Jesus as their best friend
  • and to accept the Bible as their way of life

Short Prayer of Faith – Example

‘Dear Heavenly and Almighty Father, I pray for [child’s name] to help [him/her] grow up with a strong faith that’s build upon our Rock, Jesus Christ. A faith that cannot be shaken, a faith that cannot be destroyed. Open [his/her] heart to receive Jesus as [his/her] Saviour, and You as [his/her] one and only true God. Help [him/her] to keep Your commandments diligently and to accept the Bible as the truth. In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.’

2. Prayer to Be More Like Jesus

Another powerful prayer for our children is the prayer to be more like Jesus. It goes a little hand in hand with the prayer for faith as becoming more like Jesus is a direct result of ‘hanging’ out with Him, of seeing Him as a best friend.

This type of prayer can help your child to:

  • become more like Jesus
  • see Jesus as their example
  • desire to be like Jesus in every way possible

Short Prayer to Be More Like Jesus – Example

‘Dear Heavenly Father, You gave us Your only begotten Son so we might be saved. Your Word reminds us many times to look at Jesus and ‘do likewise’. I pray now for my child [child’s name], that [he/she] may strive to be more like Jesus every day of [his/her] life. That [he/she] may look at Him as [his/her] perfect example, and may wonder: “What would Jesus do?”. Thank You, Father. Amen.’

3. Prayer for the Fruit of the Spirit

In Galatians 5:22-23 KJV, we read about the fruit of the Spirit being: ‘love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance’.

It’s a powerful prayer that definitely cannot be ‘missing-in-action’ on your prayer list. Why? Because ‘by their fruits ye shall know them’ {Matt 7:20 KJV}.

Short Prayer for the Fruit of the Spirit – Example

‘Dear God, thank You for blessing [name of child] with the fruit of Your Spirit. I pray [he/she] may continue to grow in love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, goodness, faith, humbleness, and self-control. In Jesus’ name, Amen.’

4. Prayer for Obedience

The prayer for obedience can cover several detailed topics. Personally, I focus mostly on obedience towards God and His law.

This type of prayer can help your child to:

  • obey God (His plan, His will, His guidance…)
  • obey mum and dad
  • obey God’s law

Short Prayer for Obedience – Example

‘Dear Father, I pray that You may help me to raise [name of child] to be obedient to You and Your commandments. So that [he/she] may feel happy and joyful in obeying Your Word, knowing that it makes You happy too. In Jesus’ precious name I prayed. Amen.’

5. Prayer for Guidance

We’re halfway in our list of powerful prayers for our children! Just as we do, our children need a prayer for guidance. Especially if they’ve already developed some form of independence.

This type of prayer can help your child to:

  • follow God’s guidance
  • surrender to God’s will
  • be able to listen to His voice

Short Prayer for Guidance – Example

‘My Heavenly and Almighty Father, thank You for watching over [name of child] and for guiding [him/her] whenever it’s needed. I pray that [he/she] may feel Your guidance and recognise Your voice, and to fully surrender to Your will. May [he/she] accept Your guidance every day. Amen.’

6. Prayer for Health

Just the other day, I shared a beautiful mission story with the children of our kindy Sabbath School. This story quoted the verse from Jeremiah 32:27 {KJV} – ‘Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh: is there any thing too hard for me?‘

Such a beautiful reminder that nothing is impossible with God {Matt 19:26}! And it’s a great verse to use when praying a prayer for healing.

Short Prayer for Health – Example

Dear Heavenly Father, You are the Almighty God who says: ‘is there anything too hard for me?’. I know and trust in Your Word, and believe that You are indeed able to do anything. I pray, that if it’s in Your Will, that You may heal [name of child], for I know that restoring [his/her] health is not to too hard for You. Thank You, Father. In Jesus’ name. Amen.’

If you just want to pray for health on a daily basis, you can use the following example:

‘Dear Father, thank You for keeping [name of child] in such good health. I pray You may continue to watch over [him/her], and help me to keep [him/her] healthy by providing healthy food and plenty of exercise. In Jesus’ name. Amen.’

7. Prayer for Safety and Protection

In first instance, our children might be perfectly safe and a prayer for safety might not be the first thing on your mind. But God’s Word tells us that ‘[our] adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour’ {1 Peter 5:8 KJV}.

This type of prayer can protect your child from:

  • spiritual danger
  • real danger

Short Prayer for Safety and Protection – Example

‘Dear God, only You make us dwell in safety {Ps 4:8}. I pray that today/tonight You may be with [name of child], keeping [him/her] safe and sound. Thank You, Father, for watching over [him/her]. In Jesus’ name I prayed. Amen.’

8. Prayer for Courage

The world can be a scary and intimidating space for children of any age. Well, for us as parents as well, really. And no matter for which situation they may feel afraid or nervous, a prayer for courage may just be the thing they need.

This type of prayer can help your child to:

  • have courage in strange and scary situations/places
  • be brave and have confidence in God
  • know that their courage comes from God who can do anything

Short Prayer for Courage – Example

‘Dear God, You gave courage to Daniel to keep praying and courage to his friends to never bow to the image. You gave Esther the courage to approach the king and David to fight the giant. I pray that You may bless [name of child] with courage to overcome [his/her] fears, knowing that You’re the Lord God Almighty, for Whom nothing is impossible. Thank You, Father! In Jesus’ name. Amen.’

9. Prayer for Blessings

Surely, a prayer for blessings can’t be missing from the list of prayers for our children. Just as Jacob did, we can hold onto Jesus until the Lord blesses us {Genesis 32:26}.

Short Prayer for Blessings – Example

‘Dear Almighty God, thank You for all the blessings You’ve given [name of child] and still continue to give. May [his/her] life be filled with beautiful blessings, and may [he/she] see these blessings everywhere. May [he/she] feel thankful and blessed by You at all times. In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.’

10. Prayer to Be Ready for the Second Coming

Last, but not least…. we can pray a prayer to be ready for the second coming. Personally, I believe this to be super important, especially with all the end time events happening in this world right now.

Jesus warns us many times that we need to be ready and watch because He’ll come as a thief {Revelation 16:15}. If we’re not found watching, we’ll be just as surprised by His coming as the unbeliever. Let’s get ready and help our children get ready too.

Short Prayer to Be Ready for the Second Coming – Example

‘Dear God, soon You’ll be releasing the four winds of strive, but not before the sealing of Your servants. I pray that [name of child] may be found worthy to be sealed, and that [he/she] may be ready for the second coming of Jesus Christ. I pray [he/she] will have a desire to dig deeper into Your Word, pray every day, and look forward to Jesus’ soon return. Thank You, Father for Your help and guidance. In Jesus’ name I prayed. Amen.’

These 10 powerful prayers for our children are a great way to get started with a daily prayer routine. Pray them all daily, on alternate days, or as needed… whatever works for you.
